Extras - Adventure Tips
When participating in an adventure sport, here are a few tips you should know:
- Always go prepared
- Be prepared for sudden and extreme weather changes
- Pack a set of first aid supplies
- Bring matches, a flashlight, and extra batteries
- Know your route and allow sufficient time to complete the trip
- Always go with a companion
- Do not overextend your abilities
- Inform someone, not with you, of your plans
- Carry sufficient water and food
- Be sure to carry water, even on a short hike
- Dress appropriately
- Think about layers in cooler weather (wool hats, mittens, scarves, and sweaters)
- In warmer weather, shorts or light pants are okay
- Avoid blue jeans at all times of the year (they bind, chafe, and if they get wet - they don't dry quickly)
- Avoid cotton socks, opt for wool socks (or socks designed for the sport) and sock liners instead
- Wear proper shoes (sneakers are fine on an easy-hike, but hiking boots are recommended for moderate
hikes and mandatory for strenuous ones)
- Rain jackets, suits, or a poncho will make a rainy day better (perhaps even carry an extra pair of socks in
case your feet get wet)
- Use proper gear for the particular sport you are participating in
- You may want to bring a change of clothes for after the sport is complete
