Write Up: Despite all the complications of a very humid forecast and construction on I-95, 14 MOC hikers arrived at the Signal Knob trailhead right on time. The climb up to Signal Knob started as soon we got on trail, with a couple particular steep and rocky switchbacks. Fortunately, the humidity didn't seem to get too bad until later in the afternoon. Also, the sun wasn't out in full force, which was good in some of the less shaded areas we encountered on the trail.
On Signal Knob, there was a brief Civil War history lesson on the importance of the Shenandoah Valley, and particularly Signal Knob as a signal location. We enjoyed a relaxing lunch and actions were taken to ensure everyone had enough water. Instead of taking the Massanutten trail all the way around to complete the loop, we backtracked a bit and cut across on the Meneka Peak trail. An unexpected slippery rock caused a brief scare for one hiker, but it wasn't too bad of a fall.
After encountering an additional MOC participant and taking the Tuscarora back to the Massanutten Trail and the parking lot, most of us headed off to Front Royal for some Mexican food at Jalisco. Lots of water, tortilla chips, hot sauce, burritos, cole slaw, enchiladas and beans were consumed.
Thanks to the great group of hikers for coming out and I hope you had a good time!
