Advertising/Marketing Officer
Officers & Volunteers
President & Event Coordinator -
Colin Babb

Loc: Annapolis
|
|
Colin was born in New Jersey but grew up in Oregon,
where he rarely had to expend much energy to
experience the outdoors. He lived in Eugene where he
was only an hour-and-a-half drive from both the
mountains and the beautiful Oregon coast. Some of his
earliest memories are of camping at Waldo Lake in the
Cascades and at the Oregon dunes near Florence. His
love of early American history necessitated a return
to the East Coast for college, but he continues to
enjoy getting outside every chance he can get. He has
traveled and camped nearly everywhere between Nova
Scotia and California. As an old Oregonian who had
become too much of an urbanite of late, Colin joined
the MOC as a way to reconnect with the outdoors.
In 1993, Colin completed his undergraduate studies in
history at Colgate University in New York. He moved to
Maryland after completing his masters in military history
at the University of Tennessee Knoxville in 1998. For a
number of years he worked as a magazine editor in Annapolis
and a science writer with the Office of Naval Research in
Arlington. He now works as a writer for the State Department.
Naturally, Colin tends to organize events for people to
experience the outdoors with an eye on the past.
Vice President & Preservation Coordinator -
Kevin Yue

Loc: Glen Burnie
|
|
Kevin was born in New Jersey , where he lived until he moved to California in high school.
He was the odd one of his family, because once he got involved in the Boy Scouts, he knew that he
loved the outdoors! His family supported him, but never quite understood his attraction to
getting dirty and sweaty. Kevin went through his years in the Boy Scouts participating in
many outdoors-focused events, including backpacking for two weeks in New Mexico . During all of
this time, he worked towards achieving the Eagle Scout rank and achieved that right before he
turned 18. In college though, he became too distracted with other aspects of life, but never
forgot his connection to nature. Kevin returned to his love of the outdoors by participating in
MOC events. He will go camping when he has free time away from volunteering with local
organizations, and will reschedule his calendar to make sure he can go to at least one outdoor
event (be it camping, backpacking, or hiking) per month, sometimes even more than that!
Kevin graduated from the University of Maryland in 2002 with a Bachelor of Science in Chemical
Engineering and has worked as a field services representative for two years before changing
careers and going into environmental engineering. He currently resides in Glen Burnie , but
is willing to drive wherever life takes him!

Equipment Rental Coordinator -
Cynthia Glaser

Loc: Sykesville
|
|
Cynthia has been a "local" for her entire 35 years. Her father, a Maryland State Geologist, introduced she and her sister to the great outdoors at an early age. Her childhood memories consist of picnics in the Shenandoah State Park, camping in Swallow Falls, and many outdoor jaunts to local state parks and reservoirs. Growing up she shared her home with reptiles, birds, cats, dogs and any other small mammal you can imagine. Cynthia thought her sister was crazy when at 22; she set out for a trip to the Costa Rican rain forest alone. But in 2005 Cynthia set out for her own trip to Costa Rica (not alone) and she then understood the magic of foreign places and adventure tours. She loves going to the beach, hiking the local state parks and playing in her own garden. Having only joined the MOC one year ago, Cynthia quickly immersed herself in the club making lots of new friends, organizing events, and always striving to have fun!
Cynthia has an undergraduate degree in Medical Technology and a Master's degree in Biotechnology. After bouncing around the biotech world in Gaithersburg for years, she is returning to Baltimore to Supervise a Molecular Pathology Lab in Baltimore City.
Social Coordinator -
Joe John

Loc: Catonsville
|
|
Joe was born and raised in Maryland near DC and spent most of his childhood either in the woods or on the
water. Always having an affinity for the outdoors, he was a Boy Scout First Class in his youth, a competitive swimmer,
sailor and runner. His father was into ultra distance racing as well as being a bit nutty so Joe has lots of interesting
stories to tell. For instance at the age of 4, he hiked Old Rag for the first time on Good Friday in the freezing
rain...wearing cotton...and with his 3 year old sister along he did not even get carried! At 5 Joe completed 6 - 2
mile running races and got his first trophy. By age 7, Joe was racing with his dad in class 3 white water races in
a homemade canvas canoe. At 12 Joe completed his first triathlon that was over 20 miles and was nearly killed in the
process...ask him about it and he will tell you the story...but what doesn't kill you! Joe completed 3 more Triathlons
by age 16. In High School, he went on to compete in wrestling and cross country.
Joe completed undergraduate degrees in Accounting, MIS and Computer Science with honors in December 2001. After a
short stint as a tax accountant he went on to be a technical software consultant for the leading solution provider
in the NFP sector and 7 years later he is still doing this and enjoying the freedom/flexibility of working from home.
Joe first came to the MOC in June of 2006 and participated in an Old Rag hike. He saw for the first time how great
the people are in this club soon became a very active member of the club and has remained active ever since. Since
06" he has also been more involved with hiking, trail running, mountain biking, orienteering and adventure racing.
As Joe has grown as an outdoorsman, the MOC has led to literally dozens of great friendships for him that will likely
last a lifetime.

Jennifer Adach

Loc: Wash., D.C.
|
|
New to the world of outdoor adventure, Jennifer joined MOC in March 2005.
She had a brief one-day stint with the Brownies when she was five, but
cracked during the pressure of making lanyards. Jennifer's first camping
trip was in 2004 where she was instantly bitten by the bug (strangely, both
figuratively and literally). She now enjoys exploring all that the area has
to offer. Jennifer grew up on Long Island, NY, and now lives in Adams
Morgan. Despite living in D.C. for eleven years, she still wonders why
people laugh when she asks for coffee. She has a background in both
journalism and public relations.

Chris Bowers

Loc: Baltimore

Chris was born in Georgia, but for the most part grew up in Northern
Virginia. Eventually he ended up in Baltimore, living on the water and
enjoying the crabs and the many things to do. While growing up, he spent
many a summer camping with the family and hiking in the mountains. After
moving to Baltimore and wanting to explore more of the trails, he came across
the Maryland Outdoor Club. Through outings with this club he has discovered
so many trails for hiking, discovered other activities in the Baltimore Area
to enjoy, met many new friends.
Historian -
Ruwan Alwis

Loc: Savage
|
|
Ruwan was born in Niagara Falls, NY but grew up in Cincinnati, OH. Traveling back to visit relatives in
Sri Lanka as a youngster, he really got some hardcore exposure to different cultures and got to see some pretty neat
animals and plants. Spending lots of summers at the Cincinnati Zoo and local nature center camps helped groom his
love and interest for natural history and the biological sciences. Getting a B.S. in Biology and a M.P.H. in public health
microbiology, Ruwan became a lab rat, of sorts. He shifted his career path slighty and now is in project management. As
one of the club's photographers, he tries to attend events with his camera to help document the fun times. His personal
interests (and event themes he might lead) revolve around wildlife watching, outdoor photography, community service, and
general earth science activities. That's where a good part of his free time goes! Also, he still deals with a lot of multicultural
interactions on a regular basis, so he's very patient and serious. Taking on the Historian post, he'll look to help you with
event write ups, as needed.

on our Volunteer & Dontate page. (Helping found a new successful club will look
mighty good on one's resume).
Please remember to send "thank you" messages to our officers. They volunteer their spare time to bring
you a whole lot for free (no membership fees). These messages help to make them feel like their work is
